In February 2018, the estate of Dave Kleiman filed a lawsuit against Craig Wright for up to BTC 1.1 million in the United States District Court of the Southern District of Florida. Intriguing evidence recorded in the lawsuit suggests Craig Wright is Satoshi Nakamoto, the mysterious creator of Bitcoin that disappeared many years ago. This evidence agrees with a previous testimonial from Gavin Andresen, Bitcoin developer and founder of the Bitcoin Foundation, in 2016.

Dave Kleiman and Craig Wright met each other in 2003 on an online cryptography forum and collaborated on scientific research for years. In 2008, Wright sent Kleiman an email saying, “I need your help editing a paper I am going to release later this year. I have been working on a new form of electronic money. Bit cash, Bitcoin… you are always there for me Dave. I want you to be part of it all.”

A following email said, “I need your help. You edited my paper and now I need to have you aid me build this idea.”

The text of the lawsuit says the pair collaborated to get Bitcoin operational the next few months after that.

On 3 January 2009, the Bitcoin genesis block was mined by Satoshi Nakamoto and on 12 January 2009, there is hard evidence that Wright and Kleiman sent each other Bitcoin transactions. On Thanksgiving 2009, Kleiman told his brother Ira that he was creating digital money with Wright.

The lawsuit says that the two mined BTC 1.1 million together, but none of these ended up being inherited by Kleiman family after his death. Analysis of IP and Bitcoin addresses found that Satoshi Nakamoto mined around 1 million Bitcoins, roughly the same amount that the pair mined. As of this writing on 24 June 2018, the Bitcoins are worth USD 6.5 billion and were worth as much as USD 22 billion when Bitcoin hit record highs in December 2017.

More compelling evidence that Craig Wright is Satoshi Nakamoto comes from Gavin Andresen. He says he decided to fly out to meet Wright in 2016 after an email conversation since the emails sounded a lot like Satoshi Nakamoto who he had been conversing with from 2010-2011.

Wright proved to Andresen that he was Satoshi Nakamoto by signing messages with private keys that only Satoshi Nakamoto should possess. This was done on a new computer with a freshly downloaded version of Electrum to remove any doubt. Further, Andresen said Wright was brilliant, generous, opinionated, focused, and privacy-seeking like the Satoshi he worked with six years earlier.

Andresen said, “I believe Craig Steven Wright is the person who invented Bitcoin.”
