In the Misiones Province of Argentina, the Ministry of Industry tapped into the crypto world by introducing an interesting initiative which will reward citizens with “waste coins” dubbed JellyCoin for efficient waste management. The blockchain-based token will be granted by the government for those who fulfill a responsible citizens’ duties.
Those willing to take part in the program can do so by creating an account on the JellyCoin network and can get registered as waste collectors, producers or generators. The program establishes an excellent network for effective waste segregation by linking the waste producers with the collectors. The producers will have to upload information regarding the trash being disposed of while the collectors will be responsible for segregating specific items, such as plastic, metals and organic waste. The segregated trash will then be processed by the generators at the respective locations.
Every party involved in the network will be rewarded with the cryptocurrency. This program is in fact a huge step towards combating environmental degradation as it is not a secret that irresponsible waste disposal has severe adverse impacts. When a part of the waste rots, it may smell, and generate methane gas in case of unsegregated waste, which is explosive and contributes to the greenhouse effect. In such scenarios, taking staunch steps runs hand in hand with raising awareness, especially amid the common households who contribute significantly to the waste.
Initiatives like this have time and again highlighted the importance of crypto and blockchain in tackling societal issues by involving the common folk. The statement said:
“The monetary stage of the incentive for people to behave in a certain way, that is, to separate the waste, in parallel with the awareness, allows rewarding households that perform the separation of waste with a cryptocurrency that can be used in stores or in payment of municipal or provincial fees.”
