The national postal service of Austria, Austrian Post, has released a line of collectible crypto stamps, as part of its crypto memorabilia efforts. A press release has dubbed its inaugural “crypto stamp” the first in the world to be authenticated using blockchain technology.

An initial batch of 150,000 copies of the stamp can be bought at the Austria Post online shop for EUR 6.90 each. They can be bought stamped or unstamped. The unique piece will be of interest to modern philatelists, as it comes in two special segments.

The first segment on the left bears a unicorn illustration the press release calls the “heraldic icon” of the “Ethereum community”. This can be torn off and can function as a regular stamp, used to pay for postage to send mail.

The right segment bears credentials that can authenticate the stamp on the Ethereum blockchain. It is, in essence, an Ether wallet hidden under the scratch layers. Once scratched off, the private keys and “secret phrase” list will be revealed, allowing access to the wallet.

Austria Post has never been shy to experiment with different materials and art in their stamps, having attempted embroidery, and even using porcelain and meteorite dust in their manufacture. It declares [translated]:

“Now, the Austrian Post is breaking new ground again, bringing out a brand that unites the analog and digital worlds: the Crypto stamp.”

The artist’s name, Julia Obermüller, is clearly inscribed on each stamp. 32-year old Obermüller is an industrial design artist from the University of Applied Arts Vienna who has won many prestigious awards, including the Diversitas 2016 trophy.
