  • Mentions of bitcoin halving take a spike overtaking those of gold on Twitter and other social media.

Social buzz around halving of Bitcoin in mid-May is spiking and overtaking that of gold and other assets which previously dominated the media coverage. Crypto data analysis firm, TheTIE tweeted that data suggests that conversation around ‘halving’ is rated as the ninth most debated subject linked to Bitcoin (BTC) on Twitter, with 650 tweets on the issue.  On 24 April 2020, the halving buzz became almost double its size to become the second most popular bitcoin-related subject with 1,058 Tweets.

TheTIE also noticed gradual spike in media reporting of the impending halving during April, which may have led to the growth in related social activity. The number of articles mentioning halving has seen a sharp increase mid-March. The data also suggests that media covering Bitcoin overtook gold. coronavirus coverage, however, took an immense spike in march.
TIE co-founder Joshua Frank, however, believes that halving will overtake the coronavirus chatter. He said:
“What we can see that beginning in March Coronavirus became the dominant narrative mentioned alongside Bitcoin, but more recently mentions of the Coronavirus have started to fall as the Halving has started to gain a ton of momentum.”
