After the recent exposure of a false diplomas scandal in Brazil involving eight states, a considerable debate has been started on the legitimacy of the system. The scandal is currently under investigation by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Espírito Santo, and it has been revealed that over 4,000 documents were forged by the teachers to land jobs in academia.

This debate has understandably also touched upon the need to use blockchain technology in the educational institutes to reduce the instances of such fraudulent activities. Unsurprisingly, many institutes in Brazil have already been moving towards the shift, such as the Federal University of Paraíba, which has already developed and implemented a blockchain-based system for issuing diplomas at the start of this year.

A teacher at the university, Professor Dr Guido Lemos, who is also part of the initiative, talked about the use of blockchain in their institute in an interview, where he also revealed how almost all national institutes of Brazil are currently researching on the technology. He added:

“Thanks to the advancement in research and development in Brazil, nowadays it is possible to take e.g. postgraduate courses anywhere in the country. With this facility in terms of research, virtually all the major study groups in the country on technology are already carrying out research involving blockchain, thus increasing the number of Brazilians present in this global surge towards blockchain.”

Dr Guido also said that although Brazil doesn’t legally recognize the effectiveness of blockchain technology for recording data yet, more and more universities are adopting the system for processes like storing and disseminating diplomas. He also added that this is just the beginning, and this technology is going to spread to all academic spheres in the near future:

“The MEC issued a new ordinance on backing up digital archives of universities. Blockchain technology can be applied in this case as well, although we are currently focused on the issue of diplomas for now. “
