The newly-elected president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, seems to be a big fan of Bitcoin (BTC) as per his previous statement on the topic.

Petro, who recently won the 2022 Colombia presidential election this Sunday, will replace Iván Duque Márquez on August 7. Interestingly, one of Petro’s tweets from December 2017 has been resurfacing, which stated the “strength” of Bitcoin.

The president-elect spoke on Bitcoin shortly after a major bull run in 2017, where he hinted that Bitcoin will “remove the power of emission from the states and the seigniorage of the currency from the banks.” He added (translated to English via Google translation):

“It is a community currency based on the trust of those who carry out transactions with it. Since it functions on the blockchain, trust is measured and grows, hence its strength.”

Moreover, BitcoinNews found some more remarks by the president-elect. Petro responded to the president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, over the idea of creating volcano-powered Bitcoin miners by suggesting that the nation employ the natural resources of its western coastline to mine Bitcoin.

“Virtual currency is pure information and therefore energy,” he stated at the time.

According to data by Usefultulips, Colombia is one of the most active bitcoin trading countries in the region, with a population of around 52 million.
