• Spain is setting up a research team to use a blockchain app to control the spread of COVID-19

A research team in Spain consisting of over 100 people is working towards developing an app that uses artificial intelligence and blockchain technology to forecast the growth in the number of COVID-19 cases and to better control lockdown steps.

The app has the support of the Institute of Biomedical Research of Salamanca and the Artificial Intelligent Research Institute  and it uses blockchain to store and check the digital identities of people to perform essential activities such as paying a visit to a grocery store. The way this works is that every identity will be stored in the form of a certificate that will be stored on the ledger. A person will have the private key to their own identity.

The software uses the Deep Intelligence AI tool to predict coronavirus’s potential behavior. This integrates television media and academic journals with evidence from research and shares its findings with elected leaders and health research practitioners. The app will give individuals and organizations detailed guidance and warnings about how to reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus. Juan Manuel Corchado and Javier Prieto from the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), who are also the team leaders, said:
“The technology will be able to support healthcare professionals and public health officials by providing them with information that can be used when making decisions. For example, if the data shows an increase in COVID-19 cases, officials can decide whether to shelter-in-place.”
The team is hopeful that the information reported and gathered will help shine a light on future pandemics and possibly prevent them. At present they are looking to find more sources of funding.
