A space hotel project set to launch in 2022 which accepts payment in cryptocurrency, is not only open for bookings but has already sold out its first six months of reservations.
The Orion Span project charges a cool USD 9.5 million for a luxury 12-night package of a lifetime, but a USD 80 deposit is needed for reservation. Payments in ether (ETH), bitcoin cash (BCH), litecoin (LTC), and bitcoin (BTC) are accepted.
The project was opened in April and has already attracted 26 millionaires for its first 6 months of operation. Reservations will be limited due to the hotel’s 4-6 capacity per trip. Frank Bunger, CEO and founder of Orion Span commented:
“Since opening our hotel reservations in April, we’ve been met with great excitement as space enthusiasts from around the world have moved quickly to secure their reservations,” and went on to explain:
“Aurora Station is incredibly versatile and has multiple uses beyond serving as a hotel. We will offer full charters to space agencies who are looking to achieve human spaceflight in orbit for a fraction of the cost — and only pay for what they use.”
The guests will experience zero gravity on their trip above the earth’s atmosphere and also have the opportunity to participate in space experiments, experience the craft’s holodeck, and use the hotel’s live streaming wireless internet. Bunger said that the project has plans to expand in the future along with an increase in public demand for more experiences such as commercial space travel.
Such ventures are becoming less sci-fi and more credible as space travel becomes more sophisticated and more readily attainable. The first commercial passenger is due to take an inaugural space flight with the Elon Musk’s Space X project once the craft is ready for flight. Last week Virgin Galactic launched its test flight from the Mojave Desert in California and flew at an altitude of 51 miles before landing minutes later.
The test was part of Virgin’s development programme for commercial spacecraft, aiming to provide suborbital spaceflights in the future to space tourists and suborbital launches for space science missions.
Blockchain technology could accelerate the rate of space exploration by making the supply chains which produce the components for space missions more efficient. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is beginning to examine the viability of blockchain technology, which has the potential to shorten and strengthen space exploration supply chains.
