SAP has announced a package of technologies as part of the SAP Cloud Platform. The platform is available across major cloud providers and includes a range of elements such as chatbots and machine learning, as well as a blockchain-as-a-service (BaaS) initiative.
SAP has been working in the BaaS environment since the release of SAP Leonardo which was intended to provide organizations with tools to manage digital innovations. As a global service provider, SAP is said to recognize its ability to play a role in supporting companies to take advantage of blockchain technology to improve business processes. The company advised that over sixty companies are already involved in its BaaS activities.
In its company announcement, SAP stated that the purpose was to help customers use manufacturing and supply-chain products augmented by blockchain to enhance transparency, safety and collaboration in industries such as transportation, food, and pharmaceuticals. The activity on their transportation initiative has been given a boost through the contributions of major multinational operators, with SAP noting the involvement of Intel Corp, Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co (HPE) and A3 by Airbus SE.
As per the announcement, SAP will provide the services on top of the blockchain technologies, such as Hyperledger Fabric and MultiChain. Through taking a single platform across multiple cloud providers, SAP has been able to offer what it calls a single enterprise platform as a service (PaaS). The company has also recognized the need to assist organisations in managing sensitive data, allowing for innovation in processes while retaining security.
Other global service providers are already providing blockchain technology tools and support to their clients. The involvement of another major player will add greater momentum to the development of blockchain services for businesses. In addition to the use of blockchain to develop business solutions, SAP’s service will be assisting companies to utilize data to gain richer insight into activity.
In recognition of the need for mobile technology access, SAP advised that the release of a software development kit assists organisations to gain access to their processes and data through mobile devices using Android or Chrome OS.
Investment into this sphere by large global entities will see the continued growth in innovative and practical blockchain solutions being developed across a wide range of business sectors.
