Cryptocurrency promotion through football events is one way of achieving mass adoption that has been gaining popularity, and for English Premier League Football Club Watford FC, co-hosting a crypto sport event with its crypto-led branding partner is a huge step in that direction.

The event dubbed Crypto Cup is the first of its kind in the region to garner the support of cryptocurrency and blockchain enthusiasts well vested into the football sports to discuss issues surrounding cryptocurrency mass adoption. It will be held on 16 May 2020 at the Vicarage Road stadium and see attendees from all walks of life including entrepreneurs, developers and newcomers to the cryptocurrency ecosystem.

Perhaps, this new initiative comes on the heels of further strengthening the partnership Watford FC signed with its Bitcoin sleeve branding partner,, last year. This paved a way for them to add the Bitcoin logo to the sleeves of the team’s jersey with the objective of boosting awareness and education around Bitcoin. The move hopefully brought exposure to billions of football fans across the globe each time the team played on the pitch. Tim Heath, CEO of, spoke of the impact made by football sponsorship on “raising awareness for cryptocurrency”, and hoped the Watford deal would take it to the next level. He said:

“Being part of the conversation on the day with both fans and experts, exploring what the future of crypto adoption looks like and enjoying the Vicarage Road experience is a brilliant opportunity for all involved.”

Crypto Education, Football Tournament

The sport aspects of the event will take the form of a 5-a-side football tournament, while the meet-up will feature both debate and educational sessions centered upon the subject of cryptocurrency. The organizers of the event promise it to be a fun-filled event. As Paul O’Brien, Commercial Director of Watford FC, noted, it will be an event immersed in “discussions, education, and fun”. He added:

“This is the first event of its kind to be organized at Watford FC, throughout this season we have been delighted to welcome the crypto community to experience match days at Vicarage Road, through our partnership with and the Bitcoin jersey sponsorship. Now in May, we will support this partnership with a special day which will allow the crypto community to play at the Vic, whilst immersing themselves in discussions, education and fun.”

More so, the objective may further help eliminate whatever confusion still exists among non-crypto audience towards the initiative, as most supporters within the crypto industry already consider the sleeve branding to be a smart move by both parties.

Adoption Through Inclusion

While the norm for crypto publicity through sporting events may include brand ambassadors, blockchain commercials during half-time, shirt sponsoring and crypto commercial boarding advertisements, the management team of Watford FC went a step further by bridging sports and cryptocurrencies through its support for Bitcoin payments in its online store.

The highlight of the event will be when Watford hosts a round-robin football tournament. This will take place on the hallowed turf of Vicarage Road with various partners entering a team for charity, with each team receiving a pep talk from a Watford legend.
