If you are reading this article, you are on a bitcoin journey. Really, everyone who produces and/or consumes anything on planet earth is on a bitcoin journey, most of them just don’t know it. But, what many people do not realize is that their bitcoin journey isn’t finished when they become Bitcoin Maximalists, or when they self custody their coins, or when they orange-pill their cousin. The destination of your bitcoin journey is a relationship with Jesus.
Before you click off and go “Whaaaaaat, Adam we want to get rich, not religious!” hear me out while I make 3 solid, logic based arguments as to why Jesus is a bitcoiner and why if you are a bitcoiner, you will eventually be a Jesus freak.
The First Argument: Time Preference
If you are a self proclaimed Bitcoiner, you are on a never-ending quest to lower your time preference. Most “normies” with 6 figure net worth own fancy cars they make payments on. But most bitcoiners, with a net worth in the 7-8 figure realm, will drive a car with a rusted fender, which screeches on startup and probably needs a boost to start up every few months. For a while, bitcoiners even argued about whether or not you should own a chair!
The concept of time preference is simple. Can you forego current pleasure for future benefits? It can be argued that owning a chair is a pleasure to be foregone (though I can’t say I personally make that argument as I’m currently sitting on a chair) in order to have a couple extra sats to stash away and turn into generational wealth. However, where does this time preference journey end? I came to this realization in a conversation with my 7-year-old when talking about death, and average life expectancy.
He asked me about life expectancy and I explained that I probably have 100-125 solid years on this planet. I found Bitcoin when I was about 20. I’m now 31. So, I have less than 100 years left to be a Bitcoiner (which bummed me out way more than it should have to be honest…) However, the bible teaches us that I get to hang out with Jesus forever after I die. Forever. Not in the earthly sense (which for me means less than 100 years) but actually forever as in never ending, ever. This shook me to my core.
If I am a true Bitcoiner, and I am looking for the lowest time preference possible, I need to consider life after death. I need to consider a life with Jesus.
“But Adam, how can you be so sure Jesus/Christianity is the religion?” For this question, we need to dive into our second argument.
The Second Argument: God Loves Sound Money
We’re going to dive straight into assuming God is the “right” God (if you want the full history of that you’ll have to catch my “Jesus is a bitcoiner” presentation at the Mass Adoption Freedom Festival on May 4!) but for the purposes of time (and magazine KPIs) humor me with that as a fact. Obviously, if Jesus is a Bitcoiner, we need God (the Creator) to be a sound money advocate.
Well, I’m going to borrow from Alin Armstrong (author of the book the bible and bitcoin) to teach us that God is without a doubt a sound money advocate. In fact, the bible tells us that God literally dictated that individuals will be rewarded with sound money. Summed up, it goes like this:
- God talks to Moses (OG prophet who distributed the 10 commandments)
- He says “Do not have two differing weights in your bag, one heavy and one light” (Deut. 25:13)
- AKA all money has to be the same.
- Don’t debase the money.
- God then says “You must have accurate weights so that you can live on the land that God has given you” (Deut. 25:15)
- When you use fair money, God will reward you with individual property rights.
- God then warns Moses that He “…detests anyone who deals dishonestly” (Deut 25:16)
- God hates people that cheat the money and make it unfair
Now, I don’t know about you, but I would think every single Bitcoiner out there would agree that these are core principles of Bitcoin. And they were dictated by God thousands of years ago.
With argument 1 (time preference demands we investigate God) and argument 2 (God mandates sound money) out of the way, we can dive into argument 3.
Jesus Came to Decentralize the Church
We, as bitcoiners, know that centralization of power is bad. Don’t trust, verify. Not your keys, not your coins. These are mantras that come from decades of central authorities taking advantage of the people they are supposed to be protecting. We can see through Jesus’ disruptive attitude and behavior that God aligns with the sentiment that centralization of power is bad.
In those days, the Roman empire had taken over to rule the land, but gave the Jews an exemption from the Roman pagan worship. The Jews still worshipped God.
They had a similar structure to our churches today. There was a group of “teachers of the law” (God’s law) and a small group of “Pharisees” (religious legal experts). The teachers were mostly in charge and both groups acted as the conduit to God. Well, Jesus did not like that.
In fact, some of the only times we see Jesus get hostile in the bible is towards these groups of so-called “Godly leaders”. As the son of God you might expect Jesus to buddy up to the religious leaders of the time, but He does quite the opposite. He accuses them of blasphemy and self serving practices. He calls out their hypocrisy and shows his hatred for their elitism by publicly shaming them. Jesus dismantled those who thought they had a monopoly on Godly teachings and distributed that “power” through to the people. (Matthew 23:13-39)
As a Bitcoiner, you know Bitcoin is so much more than money, or even technology. It’s a lifestyle. One that makes you a better person. It’s spiritual. The alignment between the ethos of a Bitcoiner and the teachings of Jesus are undeniable. So, I would like to challenge you.
Do you have a low enough time preference to consider a relationship with Jesus? Or are you stuck, serving an earthly master, that will certainly leave you empty and alone?
As you continue your Bitcoin journey, I encourage you to start your Jesus journey alongside it. As a Bitcoiner you are already committed to a life that (whether you know it or not) shares many principles with a Godly life. Lean into those principles, and let God show you how to take your life, and purpose, to the next level.
