Adliswil, Switzerland, 15 September 2026 — BitBox today announced that Lightning is coming to the BitBoxApp on smartphones. The new integration will be available for all BitBox hardware wallets and is powered by Breez and Spark.
Users will be able to create a Lightning hot wallet with their BitBox, top it up directly from their on-chain BitBox wallet, and send and receive Lightning payments without switching between different apps, wallets or services.
The integration is designed to connect two different ways of using bitcoin. Users can keep their long-term savings secured in their BitBox and move sats to Lightning whenever they want to spend them.
One Backup for On-Chain and Lightning
The Lightning wallet is securely derived from the backup users already use for their BitBox. There are no additional recovery words to create, store or manage.
The Lightning wallet remains separate from the on-chain BitBox wallet and functions as a hot wallet within the BitBoxApp. It is intended for smaller amounts and everyday payments, while long-term savings remain secured with the BitBox hardware wallet.
Users can move sats between their on-chain and Lightning wallets directly within the BitBoxApp.
Lightning for Everyday Payments
The integration with the Breez SDK allows users to use Lightning for fast, low-cost bitcoin payments directly from their smartphone.
Users can:
Scan and pay Lightning invoices
Send and receive bitcoin
Claim their own Lightning address
Top up from their on-chain BitBox wallet
Move sats back to their on-chain wallet
Self-custody, powered by Spark
The BitBox securely derives the seed for the non-custodial Lightning wallet, while Spark enables Lightning payments without requiring users to run a node or manually manage channels and liquidity.
Availability
Lightning will be available as a public beta in the mobile BitBoxApp from 15 September 2026 for all BitBox hardware wallets.
Existing users will be able to access the feature by updating the BitBoxApp and creating their Lightning wallet with their BitBox.
