Open source software refers to software containing source code that is accessible for inspection, modification, and improvement by anyone.

The “source code” represents the behind-the-scenes aspect of software that typically remains hidden from most computer users. It serves as the foundation that computer programmers can manipulate to alter the functioning of a software program or application.

When programmers have access to a program’s source code, they can analyze and assess the code, as well as enhance the software by adding new features or addressing any issues that might arise.

Since the source of the software is readily available, anyone can compile and use the software. That is why almost all open source software are free.

While large corporations possess the required funding and resources, many open source projects are the labor of love of individuals who contribute in their free time.

Nevertheless, developing these projects demands considerable effort, time, and might involve some overhead costs as well. Monetary support undoubtedly plays a crucial role in driving the progress of these projects.

Providing financial assistance is a significant avenue for contributing to the Open Source community. That’s why you often come across the “Donate” option on the websites of various open-source projects.
